Mining strikes a concern for govt

PRETORIA: Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu says government is concerned about the current strikes in the mining industry.

Addressing media in Pretoria on Thursday, 10 October 2013, the minister said government was engaged with the mining companies on "how best to create an environment which once more puts the mining companies and mining industry in a better space in a positive way".

She said government was, as it had been in the past, open to discussions on how to address the challenges in the industry.

Meanwhile, Cabinet at its meeting on Wednesday commended the spirit in which wage negotiations were conducted and concluded in those sectors where fast and amicable solutions were reached.

Cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams said social dialogue within the framework of labour legislation remained central to preventing strike-related violence.

She said Cabinet urged employers and employees to work together, particularly as the global economy remains under pressure, to make the South African economy more efficient, productive and to sustain decent work.
