Red Cross Children's Hospital appeals for funds

Funds still needed for specialised operating theatre equipment.

As the building of the new Operating Theatre Complex at the Red Cross Children's Hospital develops, our team at the Children's Hospital Trust have turned their full attention to the critical funding still needed to purchase the life-saving operating theatre equipment that this new facility will demand. The total estimated cost for the purchase of all the operating theatre equipment is in excess of R55 million. So far we have secured a number of generous pledges but a balance of R20 million still remains. Technological advances have revolutionised surgical methods and the complexity of operative procedures will only increase in years to come. Intricate endoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery, is increasingly being performed on children who can weigh as little as 1000 grams. Although these complex surgical interventions require hi-tech equipment they have many benefits for the patient, the most important being a dramatically reduced recovery time and considerably less pain and discomfort to the child. Ongoing voluntary donations play a crucial role in helping us maintain the standards of paediatric surgical excellence for which the Hospital is renowned and ensures the Hospital remains a leading institution for the training of paediatric specialists into the future.
