Training plan to boost govt managers' skills
By: Eric Lubisi

A training project which aims to improve the skills of junior, middle and senior managers in the public service will be unveiled on Friday in Mpumalanga.

The Accelerated Capacity-Building Flagship Project is one of five flagship projects adopted by the provincial government that aim to promote development, investment and tourism in the region.

“The provincial government has engaged the services of experts and institutions in the field of leadership development and management ... to address the skills gap," said spokesman for the premier's office, Mokope Taiwe.

Organisations such as Regenesys, Wits Public Development and Management and Africa International Advisers will also be involved in the project.

Mr Taiwe said the project will include an executive development programme for senior managers, an accelerated development programme for middle managers and a junior management programme for junior managers.

The project also aims to improve systems and people management.

A comprehensive skills audit in 2005 found that the managers, who work at both municipal and provincial level, were not properly equipped for their jobs.

The provincial government is already calling for tenders to train 1 600 junior and middle managers.

Managers will be taught to solve problems, make decisions and think strategically. They will also be taught to manage and resolve conflicts.

The trainers will need to work closely with government's human resource directorates.

The contracts for the two training programmes will run for a period of 36 months starting in April this year and ending in November 2010.

Training institutions interested in tendering for the two programmes can call Dr NM Mlondo on (013) 766-2446/7.
