Iziko has arranged a series of public engagement opportunities for this year's National Marine Week, which runs from 8 to 12 October. The theme for Iziko's Marine Week activities is the "The Sea & Us". This topic aims to draw attention to the way humans have impacted the oceans and marine life through pollution, over-exploitation of natural resources and human-induced global climate change. 
According to Independent Online, the Department of Labour announced at the SA Maritime Industry Careers Expo, held at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium, that it is set to ratify an international convention that would improve the lives of seafarers by setting strict standards for employment conditions, accommodation, and health facilities on board ships. 
According to Ports & Ships website, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) has unveiled a Maritime Centre of Excellence, which it says, is "the first-of-its-kind in the SADC region".
