South African Indies (SA Indies) is an umbrella brand for South African independent filmmakers and companies, established by the Association for Transformation in Film and Television (ATFT) for their delegations sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to international film and television markets. ATFT, launched to inspire, develop, enable and empower black individuals and black-owned companies thus enabling the transformation and growth of the South African film Industry, has lead over 16 delegations to international film and television industry markets and festivals.
Mayenzeke Baza, Director of International Relations at ATFT says, "Through participating in past international markets we have been able to showcase the inspiring creativity, energy and passion for SA film that exists within our country. Exposing independent filmmakers to a global market helps nurture and refine their art and talent, in a way that contributes to the sustainability of the SA film and TV industry."
Independent film makers and producers, from across South Africa, are invited to join the ATFT in participating in the following DTI supported delegations to; MIPTV from 13 - 16 April 2015, Tribeca Film Festival from 15 to 23 April and Cannes Marche Du Film from 12 to 21 May 2015.
- SA Indies joining the ATFT delegation to MIPTV (13 to 16 April), the world's most established TV and digital content market and the biggest gathering of entertainment industry professionals can take advantage of a discounted accreditation fee, in addition to meeting top TV executives and creative talent from around the world in order to form early stage content development partnerships and strike international distribution deals for the coming year.
- At the Tribeca Film festival (15 to 23 April), a delegation of 20 producers will participate in one on one investment meetings with the New York film industry, at the Tribeca Film Festival. This delegation will facilitate the inclusion of SA independents benefiting from co-production deals and collaboration between South African filmmakers and US filmmakers, as a response to the growing interest from international studio companies to film their production in SA. The initiative is to kickstart a relationship among independents in New York and SA and is a partnership with Kisha Cameron Dingle and Blackhouse Foundation.
- Cannes/Marche du Film 12 to 21 May) will see a delegation of 19 independent producers participating in exclusive meet and greets and networking opportunities through the well renowned producers network that is designed to stimulate international co-production. The group will also participate in workshop designed for producers who have little or no experience of the international scene.
With the support of the DTI, ATFT's 'SA Indies' delegations will showcase the country's talented filmmakers and draw attention to the diverse experience that SA has to offer. Participants who join ATFT's SA Indies delegations will also have access to facilities and networks that ATFT has at these international markets; these include exhibition stand, booth space to host meetings, WIFI access at markets, AV equipment for promos or trailers, accreditation, logo display on the stands or booths as well some PR and marketing inclusion as part of the SA delegation.
