Egyptian World Press Freedom Day Conference

The Egyptian Journalists Syndicate is to hold a conference on "Consequences of the Constitutional Amendments Related to Freedom of Expression", on 3 May 2007. This is in cooperation with the Egyptian Organisation for Human Rights, Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies and the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information.

The conference will be held at the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate premises and will start at 12 noon. The participants will include a group of intellectuals, writers, journalists and human rights activists.

Hafez Abu Seada, Secretary General of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, stated that this conference marks the World Press Freedom Day, which coincided this year with the amendment of the Constitution in the referendum that took place on 26 March 2007. These amendments included some provisions that have a negative impact on freedom of expression, especially Article 179. Accordingly, the conference will discuss the effect of such provisions on freedom of expression in general, and press freedom in specific whether over the short or the long term.
