    Malawi launches economics journalism handbook

Malawi has launched the, Economics Journalism Handbook for the Malawi Media, which has touted as an important tool towards simplification of business and economics news to readers who have been finding it incomprehensible.

The book was jointly launched last Friday, 6 March by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through its Project on Economic Governance (PEG) and the Media Council of Malawi.

The book covers elements of news reporting and writing from an economic journalism approach and is authored by Nixon Kariithi, an associate professor of Journalism and Media Studies at South Africa's University of Witwatersrand.

Kariithi is a Kenyan who lecturers in South Africa but for years has been undertaking extensive consultations with the country's editors as well as media owners in the country.

“The tendency to write economic and business news in inaccessible and crude jargon-riddled language has made many people treat and believe that economic journalism is in a class of its own, written by expert journalists and read by experts or a special class of people,” said Reserve bank Governor Victor Mbewe.

The book has eight sections including the development and weaknesses of economics journalism in Africa; context and interpretation of economic news, hints on good writing and editing as well as ethics of economics journalism.
