The competition is looking for female entrepreneurs: three amazing women who have taken the leap to work for themselves and are now creating opportunities for others – and boosting our economy.
Fairlady editor Suzy Brokensha has always believed that women should be part of the workforce, particularly in South Africa, where female entrepreneurs can contribute so much to the growth of this economy.
'It's not only about personal growth, although that is a huge part of work. It's also about building this country into the energetic, vibrant economy it should be. We believe in women, and we believe in business, and we believe that women have the potential to turn the South African economy around,' she says. 'I'll be looking for someone who has spotted a gap in the market and whose business could become a game changer in our economic environment.'
Chief patron of the Thuli Madonsela Foundation and the current chair of Social Justice at Stellenbosch University, Professor Madonsela believes South Africa is a great place for entrepreneurs – that there more opportunities here than in countries that have been operating in a globalised environment for years.
She wants women to succeed as entrepreneurs but also wants to see a business that seeks to solve society’s problems, with principled leaders who treat their staff well. ‘The winner must see herself as part of a force to build our communities, this nation, our continent and, ultimately, a better world,’ says Professor Madonsela.
As head of HR Business Partners at Santam, Annette will be looking for entrepreneurs who have the ability to take strong action and persist through challenges and failures. ‘The winners should know what they stand for, have clear ideals and a strong sense of purpose. Above all, they must be passionate about pursuing their goals and making a difference,’ she says.
Media entrepreneur and international speaker Jo-Ann Strauss is a hardworking mom. She sees entrepreneurship as a great opportunity for mothers, allowing for creativity and flexibility. Says Strauss: ‘I will be looking for strong, capable women who have not just dreamed their dreams, but have made them come true through sheer determination and resilience. This is what sets the Fairlady Santam Women of the Future apart.’
Dynamic, entrepreneur, businesswoman and TV personality Dawn Nathan-Jones’s Woman of the Future will be an entrepreneur who has delivered a sustainable and real impact in areas of people, profit and planet; someone who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and inspired others to strive for success. ‘I am looking for someone who knows all the aspects of their business and displays good financial acumen,’ says Nathan-Jones.
Each winner will receive an invaluable mentorship session with one of the judges, an Issey Miyake fragrance hamper worth R6,990, an IMM Graduate School short course worth R15,000, a Michel Herbelin watch worth R10,500, a Samsonite Karissa Biz Bail Handle and Spinner Suitcase worth R729, a Madrid ladies handbag and purse from Jekyll & Hyde valued at R4,799, a Cross pen worth R2,500 and one media training session, plus R50,000 in cash to the Woman of the Future and R20,000 in cash each to the Rising Star and Social Entrepreneur.
