Gogo Trust calls to spread the magic this winter

The Gogo Trust is a non-profit organisation (NPO) that creates job opportunities in underprivileged communities by training senior women aka 'gogos' to knit beanies for their personal financial support.

Gogo Trust calls to spread the magic this winter

The gogos knit at their own pace and in their own homes in the Soweto area. Their beanies are sold to the public and corporates for R80 each of which R50 goes to the respective gogo. The fee covers the NPO's costs, i.e. the purchase of wool, knitting needles and the general day-to-day running of the project. The trust provides the gogos with wool and needles to avoid them having to fork out for any overheads. Mike Walker explains, "We set up bank accounts for our gogos to ensure that they get their money within two days of delivery." The Gogo Trust's success is attributed to partnerships with corporates and organisations. "We are happy that companies are getting involved and opening up their hearts for the NPO," he says

The Gogo Trust began in 2010 with teaching six elderly 'gogos' how to knit beanies. "I started the initiative with my gogo and it grew from there. I would like everyone to spread the word about The Gogo Trust as I believe that it has the potential to spread its magic throughout the country and create employment for even more women," says Walker.

Look out for 'gogo jars' stocking beanies at selected boutiques, restaurants and salons. The money raised goes back to the Gogo Trust to ensure that the gogo's can keep knitting.'
