One&Only hosts 56 learners at hospitality workshop

The One&Oly hosted a full day Careers Workshop for 56 Grade 11 and 12 learners from the Lalela Project in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, in celebrating the spirit of Nelson Mandela and his dream to build a better future for South Africa's youth.

The workshop introduced them to the possibility of a career in hospitality and involved the entire hotel in a joint Mandela Day give-back, with the key focus aimed at broadening the minds of learners to new opportunities and to help them manifest a different future for themselves.

The day’s programme was launched by celebrity chef, restaurateur, and media personality Reuben Riffell, who shared his own personal history and story for the students. The programme also included a hands-on presentation by all of the hotel’s different departments, from the Concierge through to Sushi Making – and everything in between including a ‘5 minute Frenzy’ session run by the Fitness Centre.

The One&Only has supported Lalela since it's establishment in 2010 - their involvement includes initiatives such as the annual Mandela Day Give-back Careers Programme, annual internships for up to 20 students each Festive Season and the Lalela Gallery which is rapidly gaining an enviable following in Cape Town for the quarterly exhibitions showcasing the artwork of the Lalela students.

The learners' transport from Hout Bay to the One&Only in the V&A Waterfront was sponsored by City Sightseeing on one of their Hop-on Hop-off buses, a fun-filled and much anticipated unique experience for the learners.

Lalela provides educational arts for at-risk youth to spark creative thinking and awaken the entrepreneurial spirit.
