Tourism income up 8.2% in September

Total income for the tourist accommodation sector increased by 8.2% in September compared with the same period last year, Statistics SA said.

Income from accommodation increased 9.8% year-on-year in September‚ the result of a 5.4% increase in the number of stay-unit nights sold and a 4.1% increase in the average income per stay-unit night sold.

The types of accommodation that recorded positive year-on-year growth rates in income from accommodation in September were guest houses and guest farms (15.4%)‚ "other" accommodation (9.6%) and hotels (9.5%).

Income from accommodation increased by 11.6% in the third quarter of this compared with the same period last year. The main contributors to this increase were hotels (11.7% and contributing 7.5 percentage points); and "other" accommodation (13.1% and contributing 3.6 percentage points).
