    BlackBerry Z10 remains business tool

BlackBerry's much-delayed high-end smartphone, the Z10, goes on sale in SA in a few weeks. The sleek yet solid new touchscreen device is aimed squarely at business users and is a worthy alternative to the three other main contenders, Apple's iPhone 5, Samsung's Galaxy S3 and Nokia's Lumia 920.
    BlackBerry Z10 remains business tool

Hardware-wise, the four phones are much on a par - decent cameras, bright, detailed screens and good battery life are features they have in common.

The Z10's main difference is the mobile operating system software BlackBerry 10 (BB10). It's the new kid on the block, up against Apple's iOS, Microsoft's Windows Phone8 and the world's most popular incumbent by far, Google's Android.

BB10 has some compelling features for users and information technology administrators.

BlackBerry Balance, built into BB10, can switch the phone between two configurations - personal and business. The personal settings apply to the users' private e-mails, documents, photos and music files, for example.

The business profile, accessible by means of a simple thumb swipe on the screen, switches it to a profile that keeps corporate data secured and encrypted. This section of the phone can be ring-fenced and controlled by an organisation's IT department.

BB10 has a unified inbox - the Hub - where all messages can be viewed in a single window, no matter which application delivers them. So tweets, SMSes, e-mails, BBMs, Facebook messages and WhatsApp messages all appear in one window, which means you don't have to bounce between the different apps to gain access to them.

The BlackBerry Z10 is a great device and a good reason for the BlackBerry faithful to remain loyal. More than 70,000 apps are available immediately. Another model with a physical keyboard, the Q10, will be on sale later in the year.
