Business Day says Knysna faces a major pollution threat as E-coli bacteria has been found in its estuary and the town's local authority says it has appointed contractors to rectify the problems that may have been caused by an extended power outage in the town on 3 June 2012.
The E. colli levels in the Knysna Lagoon were way over the limit at 2 419 parts to 100 millilitres of water in one spot and at 1 421/100ml in another, considerably higher than the recommended levels of less than 400/100ml.

Next month Knysna hosts its annual Pick n Pay Oyster Festival that draws thousands of people to the seaside village.

We have taken decisive steps with regards a recent pollution incident in the renowned Knysna estuary. We are pleased that our actions have already delivered very positive results. And we look forward to another successful Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival. Samples taken on 4 June revealed raised levels of pollution at certain points within the estuary. A contractor was employed to clean the culverts where the highest readings were taken. These are being cleaned on a weekly basis until at least the middle of July. We also reinstated a slow release chlorination process in these areas. Various factors contributed to these unexpected readings. The readings were taken one day after our region endured a day-long Eskom power outage; we experienced some rainfall during the weekend which washes unwanted material into the stormwater system; and a blockage due to the misuse of a fat-trap in town caused one of our sewer lines to malfunction. We will soon be rolling out an extensive public awareness campaign on the proper use of commercial fat traps, as well as the consequences establishments will face if found to be misusing these systems. In the meantime we are excited to welcome all our visitors to the upcoming festival and look forward to sharing this fantastic event with them. - Municipal Manager Lauren Waring Posted on 23 Jun 2012 12:01
