Siv On Broadway

As a first timer to On Broadway I was fascinated by the layout. A small, intimate restaurant with a stage. The sign on the stage reads Dekaf. I am already intrigued. We take our seats in a corner and order cocktails and a main calamari that splits perfectly between two. The lights dim and on walks Sivuyile Ngesi, better known as Siv. His opening joke pokes fun at Julius Malema and I know I'm going to enjoy this thoroughly.
Siv On Broadway

Siv started performing about two years ago and has been in plays in Grahamstown and in the movie Invictus. He was told by Clint Eastwood that he needed to sound more black, which is a clear indication of how white this young, black man actually is - although he is the first to say how proud he is of being black. From the start you can tell he loves to push the boundaries and that is the very reason he has a Border Collie named Eugene. (Just to mess with the white folk he tells us.)

Siv brings the black and white controversy that is still within us and puts it on display. He pokes fun at whites, coloureds, blacks - both male and female - and even our very own president. So what exactly did I take away from this amazing performance? That apparently Siv knows he's black because he is equipped so and that the grass is only greener on the other side because there is more shit. So if you are looking for intimate evening out, dinner and a laugh that will hurt your sides, go see Siv every Monday and Sunday evening - you wont be disappointed.

Dekaf runs at the On Broadway Theatre in Shortmarket Street, Cape Town every Sunday and Monday in May (9th & 10th, 16th & 17th, 23rd & 24th, 30th & 31st). The show starts at 20h30 with dinner from 18h30 and tickets cost R65 each via 021 424-1194. www.onbroadway.co.za.
