[Loeries 2009] Between10and5 House party FAIL

27 Sep 2009 15:2711 commentsBizLike
If you weren't keen to spend the entire weekend being part of everything to do with Loeries, Between10and5 hosted an escape with a house party based at a secret location. Before attending, I researched what Between10and5 is really about. It is a platform for agencies, freelancers, illustrators, artists and other creatives to showcase their best work on a daily basis.
So I trekked through the mountain from Camps Bay, battling it out with the rain to arrive at the secret location. I arrived at the "location" (a house - somebody's home) not too early, as I thought the party would at least be pumping before it ends. Well...uhm, unfortunately it wasn't.

I kind of felt like I was gate crashing and didn't really feel welcome as I walked into the house to find people chilling in the lounge area, chatting and sipping on Steri Stumpi milkshakes. I greeted them and walked in only to be welcomed by one of the guys who runs Between10and5. He thanked me for coming and I asked, "What's been going on here?" His response was that it was just a couple of his friends hanging out.

To me this isn't really a party - there was no music; it was just a bunch of friends hanging out in different rooms. You could bring your own snacks and drinks and a cash bar was available. I didn't take either with. And I didn't stay too long either.

PS. Where were the foosball tables? Where was SCAR Hair who were supposed to "dish out some free styling?" And where was the VICE TV room "showing some of the hottest videos and movies?"

Reporting fail-
Went to the same party and experienced lots of music, welcoming people, foosball table was present and accounted for, and lots of booze mostly free or sponsored. Maybe you got there too early? Posted on 28 Sep 2009 03:18
oh shame-
It's not a "fail", its just a guy who, on a rainy cape town saturday,"trekked through the mountain" (sounds amazing) and then went to house party (at house, how bizarre) and then felt left out (and brought nothing along with him), quite normal really Posted on 28 Sep 2009 14:14

Where else did you expect a house party to be?-
I think the 10and5 party was a great effort considering it was based around a swimming pool and had such miserable weather conditions to contend with. It was at a beautiful house, there were rather large speakers playing good music, people playing fooseball in the rain and the Scar hairdressers were there at around 12. Sorry you missed it all, you obviously arrived when the weather had already won the battle. Posted on 28 Sep 2009 14:26

FYI-
That "bunch of friends hanging out in different rooms" were the "freelancers, illustrators, artists and other creatives" that make up the 10and5 community, and as far as i know they all had a good time and were happy to be there! Thanks for the party 10and5, it was the perfect antidote for a weekend filled with ego. Posted on 28 Sep 2009 14:36
You aren't from Cape Town are you?-
And if you are you're not from town, right? Posted on 28 Sep 2009 14:46

FAIL-
Writer-journalist-guy - Are you Helen Keller in disguise? It was a cool party, especially considering the weather. I think what you needed was friends, so you could also sit around in the rooms and listen to the non-existent music. And are you familiar with the concept of the fail jokes? Your fail joke is a fail. Fail. Posted on 28 Sep 2009 14:47
Wrong end of the stick.-
10and5 is not a massive production company attempting to host a fabulous Loeries soiree. They were very generously offering a cool place to chill inbetween such soirees that was not sponsored by Heineken and you could bring your own booze, page through a Vice magazine or just regroup for the parties ahead. And this they did really well. Posted on 28 Sep 2009 15:00

Location, location, location...-
If it wasn't mean't to be a "a fabulous Loeries soiree" then why all the hula-baloo about the oh so secret location - in an email sent out where the link to said secret location didn't even work - now that's a big FAIL in my book.

Anywho, Loeries is over - do better next year 10and5 - that's if Loeries is in CT again - which sounds like it will be since everyone had such a blast. Oh well... Posted on 29 Sep 2009 06:52

a proper reply-
Hey Evan - it's unfortunate you didn't have a good time. The feedback we got from the party was very positive, nearly everyone I spoke to had a great time, even if they did get a bit wet initially. I think you might have spoken to me when you arrived there, next time I'll make more of an effort to introduce you to the other people. There was quite an eclectic mix of people, and everyone ended up mingling with everyone - I saw quite a few different groups chatting to each other later on. I also bumped into a number of people who hadn't heard about 10and5 before (i.e. just like you) who met some people there and ended up having a blast.

We had quite a number of free drinks rounds going - you could also have popped down to the bottle store just down the road and picked up a quart or two on your card if you were cash strapped. Quite a few people did that and we kept their beers or wine cold for them in the ice buckets.

I must admit, you are 100% spot on with attendance! We did expect more numbers (about 270 people signed up) but we had a lot to compete with - most people were nursing the worst hangovers of their life on Saturday, it was terrible weather (and if you know Capetonians you'll know how fickle they are when it looks like rain...) plus those that were brave enough to face the weather could have made the trip through to Earthdance (a few of our contributers were actually doing a live painting session at the same time as the house party). Either way, that didn't stop the more or less 60-80 people from popping in during the day - which was entirely what we expected people to do.

Our plan was to start at 10AM purely as a gimmick (Between 10 and 5 - geddit?), but we only expected people to arrive at 1PM. Turns out most people only woke up at 1PM... Scar was there around that time, but they also had a real paying job to perform at their shop and left soon after doing a couple of people's hair - I could have given them a call again a bit later but by that time we had already moved indoors and everyone's hair was already frazzled. We had a couple of epic foosball matches while still outside, but when it started raining we had to pack the table away in order for it not get rusted. Not sure how glad FOOZI tables would have been to get a water-sogged table back... besides, do you have any idea how heavy it would have made the table if it was full of water!

Our plan was to showcase the VICE videos in the section downstairs, but as we moved up it kind of fell by the wayside - no one complained about it too much though as they could read the latest issue (that just arrived off the presses). If you were looking to talk to the VICE guys, they were there earlier but you missed them it seems!

Judging by your pictures you came when we had moved the party inside. We were having the party outside at first (the bars were setup there, a braai was going, the music could be played a lot louder, etc), but even though people were adamant to be outside, I made the call to move the whole party inside (this was when we moved the bar for the second time already!). I was initially quite hesitant, but everyone behaved themselves awesomely - they respected the house but still had a great time. We never set out to have an epic, crazy, balls-to-the-wall party - I hope this was not what you expected! It was about a couple of people who in some way connect through Between 10 and 5 to meet the other people who connect through Between 10 and 5. I met a number of people for the first time on Saturday and I'm stoked we had a chance to chat.

So it's a pity you didn't have a cool experience. Our community did and that's what the party was about. Hopefully you'll become part of that and feel more involved next time. Oh yeah, it would have been kind of silly to have a house party at a club or restaurant..

Leroy - We're not sure why the link didn't work, it seems that the problem was sporadic (for some it did, for others it didn't). We sent out an SMS as well. Just because we want to hype a party doesn't mean it needs to be bat shit crazy. Posted on 29 Sep 2009 12:21

Keep it up-
I have to say that I really enjoyed the 10&5 house party. It was a great opportunity to meet new people in a relaxed and open environment, rather than competing for attention in a glitzy and over-rated club.

Thanks 10&5 for taking a leap of faith and opening your house to a bunch of crazy creative kids. Posted on 29 Sep 2009 14:38

Well…uhm,-
It was lovely a house party. Perfect chance to actually meet great people in a cool environment. Looking forward to the next one Uno! Cape Town continues to impress... Posted on 29 Sep 2009 16:20
