Hip-Hop Explosion - Love of My Life comes to Artscape Theatre

A showcase of the Cape Town Hip-Hop fraternity, entitled ‘Love of My Life', comes to the Artscape Theatre on July 10 and 11 to confirm that this groove just won't stop. Dreams will ignite as this vigorous show merges drama and Hip-Hop's creative elements to celebrate what it means to be a Hip-Hop head (that's insider-speak for ‘follower').
It's the fifth year that the show organisers, Hip-Hop Connected, return to the theatre to present Hip-Hop passion. This theatre production is part of Artscape Theatre's Winter Showcase. Committed Hip-Hop disciple Teba Shumba directs and promises “dynamic dance, funky beats, spectacular lights and a superb cast”.

Audiences can also expect “jaw-dropping performances against an urban backdrop, representing the streets where our youth are raised”. Shumba says there will also be more dancing in this year's show. And organisers will ensure vibrant activities at the venue, including photographic and graffiti exhibitions, DJ Eazy spinning some sounds and on sale will be local Hip-Hop magazines, DVDs to educate, clothing and music CDs. Plus live dance demonstrations will thrill audiences even before they grab their seats.

While ‘Love of My Life' is a celebration of Hip-Hop, it is also offers recognition to the sub-culture's mentors that have played a significant role. Bringing Hip-Hop to the theatre meanwhile dispels the negative stereotypes associated with this sub-culture. Yes, it's time to recognise that it's not all about gangs, drugs and slapping your woman around.

The theatre is also a space to introduce Hip-Hop to the uninitiated. Families can enjoy this show while being exposed to the artistry that fuels it. It's about giving a space to youngsters to do what they do best - have a great time - and showing their parents the positive side of Hip-Hop. This is after all one of the very few mainstream art-forms that has been used to combat social ills, particular in impoverished communities.

But back to the music! Performers on the show's line-up are D.A.T, Jaak, Umyalezo, Ill-Literate-Skill, 5th Floor, Rattex, Chronic Clan, EJ Von lyrik (Godessa), Eavesdrop, Champions Band with DJ Azuhl and break-dance crew Immortal Style and Bgirl Vee & Snooky. All performers will be backed by Champions, a five-piece band that includes DJ Ahzul, and dancers will ensure an energetic flow. Hip Hop pioneers Chuk-D and Shaheen will be part of a multi-media presentation at the event.

The show happens on July 10 at 8pm and on July 11 at 2pm at Artscape Theatre. For media enquiries, interviews or more information contact Candice Jansen on cell: 076 958 9593.
