Cape Philharmonic Orchestra presents Cirque de la Symphonie

Following the success of its Celebrity Symphony Season, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra presents a series of winter concerts, including four performances at City Hall and a special "Cirque de la Symphonie" at Artscape Theatre.

Thursday 1 August (8pm, City Hall)

Conducted by Brandon Phillips (Artistic Director and Resident Conductor of the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra) and featuring pianist Leslie Howard and organist Grant Bräsler as soloists, this performance includes:

  • Adagio for Strings by Barber
  • Piano Concerto No. 2 in G major, Op. 44 by Tchaikovsky
  • Symphony No. 3 in c minor, Op. 78 ("Organ") by Saint-Saëns

Thursday 8 August (8pm, City Hall)

Conducted by Arjan Tien (Artistic Leader and Principal Conductor of the Magogo Chamber Orchestra in the Netherlands) and featuring Grammy-nominated pianist Petronel Malan as soloist, this performance includes:

  • The Wood Dove, Op. 110 by Dvorák
  • Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor, K. 466 by Mozart
  • Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90 by Brahms

Thursday 15 August (8pm, City Hall)

Conducted by Arjan Tien and featuring Russian violinist Sergey Malov as soloist, this performance includes:

  • Capriccio Espagnol, Op. 34 by Rimsky-Korsakov
  • Violin Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich
  • Symphony No. 41 ("Jupiter") by Mozart

Thursday 22 August (8pm, City Hall)

Conducted by Arjan Tien and featuring violinist Avigail Bushakevitz and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz as soloists, this performance includes:

  • Oberon Overture by Weber
  • Double Concerto in d minor by Mendelssohn
  • Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 ("Pastoral") by Beethoven

Friday 23 August to Sunday 25 August (Artscape Theatre)

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the Cirque de la Symphonie are partnering to provide an extravaganza of spectacular contortionists and aerial artists. With eight internationally acclaimed acrobats and aerial flyers performing to choreographed classical masterpieces, this combination of sensational symphony and three-dimensional spectacle will showcase two forms of art that will take your breath away. Theodore Kuchar, one of the most prolifically recorded conductors of the past decade, will be on the podium under the acrobats!
