Apart from the fact that the sudden scramble on the part of the government for answers to the current blackouts is about as useful as rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic - since it is largely their own lack of foresight that is now keeping us in the dark - there is an upside. Yes... hard to believe, but there is. Romance! After 33 years of married bliss, or something like that, anyway, the wife and I are back to candle-lit dinners and now we actually talk as well - because we can't watch any repeats on DStv either. We chat animatedly about the pros, but mainly cons, of our new life together... of undercooked (or uncooked) dinners, cold roasts, warm wine, sour milk, melting ice-cream, tepid bathwater, cold showers, flat cellphone batteries, unwelcome pongs from the freezer that is now a melter, the heady reek of petrol fumes from the generator next door, the reassuring sound of it puttering away through the dead of night, and all those other things that are now part of our daily life. But back to romance... I live in hope, because there is
no way she can have a headache
every time there's a blackout. So there is a chance, slim I know, but a chance, that one person's blackout could be this man's make out.
