    Cap Lamp, a top concept

    The Accenture Innovation Index has named First National Battery's new lighting solution for the mining industry, the Cap Lamp, as one of the Top 20 Concepts in the inaugural Accenture Innovation Index Awards.

    The Accenture Innovation Index is the first of its kind globally and saw entries from 190 companies. Entries were judged against strict criteria by innovation experts and prominent local business leaders who selected and short-listed the winning concepts which were deemed to display 'Innovation Mastery'.

    First National Battery recently launched its new TC1 and TC2 Cap Lamps that feature enhanced intelligence and LED Lighting technology, setting a new standard in underground lighting. The Cap Lamp also features a patented optical reflector design that significantly improves peripheral lighting for miners, with main light output of over 6,000 candela.

    Identifying the user

    The battery casing of the lamp allows for the incorporation of an RFID device to help locate miners in the event of an emergency shaft clearance. The identification of the user can be determined by issuing the lamp with a card specific to both the miner and the lamp and without which, it will not function.

    "We are very proud and honoured that our Cap Lamp has been recognised for the great innovation it is," says MD of First National Battery, Dr Louis Denner. "Our latest design was developed specifically for the South African mining industry, which has some of the most severe underground conditions in the world."

    Voltage is regulated

    The built-in intelligence of the Cap Lamp warns the user when an hour of battery life is remaining, automatically switching to a low or auxiliary beam when only ten minutes of battery life remain. The lamp is also fitted with a micro-processor to regulate the input voltage while charging. An eight hour charge of the Cap Lamp powers the main light on high-beam for at least 24 hours, while the auxiliary light can last for more than 60 hours.

    "The cable connections in the Cap Lamp battery have been specifically configured to prevent incorrect wiring," explains Denner. "This ensures that miners are not sent underground with faulty equipment."
