Avis plants trees in Tembisa

Avis Cares volunteers, in conjunction with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), planted 300 fruit trees in Tembisa near Johannesburg to mark the end of Arbor Month, where FTFA recorded the planting of over 32,000 trees for disadvantaged communities across South Africa.

"We as a company strongly support the work that FTFA do, and were delighted to be able to be part of a project in an area that some of our staff members come from," says Christa Smit, sustainability manager at Avis. "We believe the fruit trees will also be a great source of food that will make a lasting difference for the generations to come. The Avis Cares volunteers really enjoyed the day and the personal interaction with the residents."

The 300 Avis trees will not only provide oxygen and enhance nutrition, but they will also provide shelter, settle the dust in the barren settlement and enhance the value of the houses and the aesthetics of the area.

"By including its employees in the planting of trees, Avis is illustrating its commitment to a sustainable future, increased climate change and environmental awareness for both their staff and the community of Esselen Park. If more companies took responsibility for their actions, South Africa would be on a stronger path to mitigating the devastating effects of climate change," says Jeunesse Park, founder of FTFA.
