Dredger sinks at Port Ngqura

According to The Herald quick-thinking emergency workers in Nelson Mandela Bay averted a potential tragedy when a large Chinese dredger sank at the Port of Ngqura. Their actions came in response to a rescue call made from one of the 15 people working on the dredger.

There was no loss of life, no injuries and major environmental pollution has been prevented.

The Chinese dredger is being used to build a second quay at the Port Ngqura. Top Transnet officials, including chief executive Brian Molefe flew into the city to assess the situation in the port.

The Herald reports that according to people involved in port construction, one of the four posts used to stabilise the dredger while it was working gave way. However, Transnet says it is still investigating the circumstances leading up to the sudden sinking of the dredger.
