The Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge has been transformed from a utilitarian business hotel to a stylish, sophisticated and elegant property that has an entirely new look throughout the rooms, suites and public areas.

Hotel general manager Charl van Wyk said the refurbishment had transformed the hotel from basic to elegant, modern and sleek, making the most of available space in every room. "But while the hotel had had a complete revamp, we're striving to ensure that it remains excellent value for money in what is a reasonably expensive precinct."
Van Wyk said one of the biggest and most welcome changes was the installation of air-conditioning throughout the hotel.

Range of choice

The hotel comprises five room types from studios to deluxe units and all were gutted, leaving the architects and designers with a blank canvas.

The biggest changes involved the business suites and deluxe units. The old business units comprised a small bedroom with a separate small lounge. The revamp has seen see the interior wall being demolished and one large room created.

The deluxe units have arguably undergone the biggest change. They were deconstructed and built from scratch with a bath, separate shower, opaque glass walls between the bathroom and bedroom, gorgeous interior décor and king-size beds.
Every room has also been equipped with flat-screen televisions and top-end fittings and finishes.

Inteco Interior Designs' Gabi Els said furniture, fittings and equipment was specifically designed to maximise the use of the existing space, with most items custom made.

"I chose monochromatic shades of taupe, silver and brown as the backdrop and therefore the curtains, netting, wallpaper, paint and 100% waterproof lock-in vinyl floors create a restful backdrop. Crisp white percale linen and white high-gloss built-in units provide a fresh contrast.

"The introduction of solid oak into a very contemporary concept brought an element of Africa and nature, creating a modern yet comfortable and practical home away from home."

The hotel forms part of the Protea Hospitality Group, Africa's largest and leading hotel group, and the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business.

Protea Hospitality Group director of sales, marketing and revenue, Danny Bryer, said the transformation of the hotel was one of the most dramatic he had seen in years.

"Very little was done to the hotel from the time it opened its doors in 1991. Some 20 years later, it's like walking into an entirely new property.

"We're exceptionally proud of the transformation and envisage a long and happy partnership with the Graduate School of Business in this fantastic hotel."
