Transport volumes increase in January

The volume of goods transported in SA rose by 2.2% year-on-year in January‚ with the corresponding income increasing by 8.1% over the same period‚ Statistics SA data showed on Monday (18 March).

Statistics SA released its monthly survey of the land transportation industry‚ covering passenger and freight transportation by rail and road.

Income from freight transport rose by 7.6% or R24.5bn in the three months ended January this year compared with the same period last year.

The main contributors to this increase were primary mining and quarrying products‚ which contributed 3.2 percentage points; manufactured food‚ beverages and tobacco products‚ contributing 1.6 percentage points; and other freight‚ which contributed 1.4 percentage points.

The number of passenger journeys rose by 10.7% year-on-year in January‚ with the corresponding income rising by 17.4% over the same period.
