New CEO for Heart and Stroke Foundation SA

The chairman of the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa, Farouk Meyer, this week announced the appointment of Dr. Vash Mungal-Singh as CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa. Dr. Vash Mungal-Singh succeeds outgoing CEO, Robert de Souza, who recently retired after almost 20 years at the helm.

Dr. Mungal-Singh combines an impressive record of achievement in both the medical and commercial fields. Her qualifications include an MBA (UCT), FFPath (Haematology) (College of Medicine, SA) and the MBChB (University of KZN).

Starting her career in KZN as a Haematologist in 1996, she thereafter moved to Cape Town to continue practicing as a specialist haematologist over a period of seven years, in both the private and public healthcare sectors.

Dr. Vash Mungal-Singh successfully pursued and obtained an MBA qualification at the University of Cape Town in 2004, and remained with the institution thereafter as director of three of its business administration programmes, the MBA, Associate in Management and the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Practice programmes.

Her professional expertise other than medical includes business management at a senior level, organisational and strategic development and programme delivery and experience in the academic environment.

Dr. Mungal-Singh also brings a considerable level of knowledge of the NGO / NPO sector through her ongoing volunteer work, board member positions in various NGO's and her passion for social development through the growth and empowerment of others, strongly influences her professional activities.

In welcoming Dr. Mungal-Singh to the foundation, Meyer stated: “Our new CEO appointment is the culmination of a significant number of months of evaluation and planning in which a new vision has been developed for the foundation.”

“After several demanding years as chairman and with the challenges of his top management role in commerce, we are extremely grateful that Richard Cramer has agreed to remain on the board as deputy chairman.

“I simultaneously moved from my role as deputy chairman to take over the seat of chairman and I trust that, with the help of my dedicated colleagues on the board, I will be able to maintain the momentum that has been started.”

Commenting on the foundation's future plans, Meyer said: “We will be expanding the board with the appointment of several highly respected individuals who will bring an appropriate blend of medical and commercial experience to the table. In so doing, the new board will give the necessary backup and support to Dr Mungal-Singh and her management team as she leads the organisation to fulfill the hugely significant role it needs to play in the lives of all South Africans.”
