Eugene Kaspersky, co-founder and chief executive officer of Kaspersky Lab, reckons that the recent Stuxnet worm attack was spawned by a team with backing and resources so large that it can only mean that whoever they are, they have backing of their government - whichever that may be. In a stark warning, Kaspersky says, "This malicious program was not designed to steal money, send spam, grab personal data ... It was designed to sabotage plants, to damage industrial systems." Given the standing of his company, one can only hope that Kaspersky is exaggerating the threat, but that's unlikely - and that means Stuxnet is as great a threat as he says it is. It takes the issue of malware to a whole new plane - and reinforces the need to ensure your own anti-virus and malware protection software is up to date.
