Well, here we go, 2008 has arrived, New Resolutions have been made - and wisely abandoned - and for the luckier ones of us down here in the tourist hub of South Africa (Cape Town, in case you were wondering), relatives who seem to feel we are on permanent holiday have finally shuffled back to wherever they came from. For the most unfortunate locals, 'guests' are hanging on like grim death... Incidentally, you can spot those of us who are still burdened with visitors... we have a hunted expression and tend to be rather... how can I say this tactfully... abrupt! Retail-wise, 2008 promises to be just as interesting; petrol looks like it'll be going through R8 a litre and that will have a knock-on effect down the line. In addition, we'll probably have another rate hike or two, and that is an even bigger downer than opening your door to find Uncle Nigel, Aunt Nellie, their brood and their slobbering fleabag on your doorstep all yelling "Surprise!" and "Woof", respectively. It looks like 2007 might really have been the 'Good old days'. Having said that, I know we will all rise to the occasion and do our utmost to make this year our best yet, so good luck for 2008 - may your gold mine be barren because there's too much oil in it.
