The closing date for South African entries into this year's
International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) HIV/AIDS Investigative Reporting Fellowships is 26 April 2012. The foundation, supported by the MAC Aids Fund, seeks 10 experienced South African journalists to participate an elite yearlong programme, administered by frayintermedia, which encourages innovative reporting on the epidemic.

Media24 investigative journalism unit has launched a website to provide a consolidated home for stories that the investigative journalism team produces for a variety of its daily and Sunday newspaper titles. The site is also a place for whistle-blowers and others to share with tips and documents.

Taco Kuiper awards must be in by 2pm, Friday, 17 February 2012 for what is described as the richest prize in journalism for top investigative reporters. It is open to print or broadcast journalists or teams of journalists who can enter a single story or a series of related stories dealing with events and issues affecting South Africa, published or broadcast in 2011.

Commenting on the decision of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) to form an ad hoc committee on the
Protection of Information Bill, the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) welcomes the decision, saying now the NCOP now has an opportunity fully to consider the ways in which the bill fails our democracy and to remedy them. The Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) adds its voice to the call to the NCOP.

Protection of Information Bill in Parliament. The local muckrakers said the bill was designed to intimidate whistleblowers and insider sources so as to make investigative journalism even tougher, if not more dangerous.

[Herman Manson: @marklives] Andrew Trench, editor of the
Daily Dispatch, has resigned from the paper after being headhunted by Media24 to head up its investigative unit from 1 September 2010. He is tasked with getting the unit, which was set up last year, off the ground. Respected journalist Jacques Pauw, who led the unit at its launch, will focus on investigative stories rather than the management of the unit.
