Task team formed by Transnet and motor industry

The motor manufacturing industry and Transnet have established a joint task team aimed at improving the efficiency of the automotive sector according to an article published in Business Report.

Evan Dold, chairman of the OEM Purchasing Council of the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa says that agreement with Transnet was reached on the formation of a task team to look into all aspects of logistics for the industry.

Dold was addressing delegates at the Automotive Industry Development Centre conference held in Boksburg.

The short-term goal was to resolve disruptions at the Durban port that were related to Navis, the new container management system introduced at the port a few months ago.

The new system had contributed to extensive delays and high levels of congestion at the port and these factors were making the automotive industry less competitive.

Other studies would focus on finding ways of increasing the volume of vehicles transported by rail in an effort to get car-carrying trucks off the roads.
