Body Worlds expo extends Joburg leg

With the Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life exhibition having attracted more than 80,000 visitors since the opening of the Joburg leg of its global tour in March, organisers have been convinced to extend its stay in Johannesburg.
Body Worlds expo extends Joburg leg

Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life, which made its African debut at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town in October last year, caused a stir as the first anatomical exhibition of its kind to display real human bodies. The exhibition, with over 200 specimens on display, was initially scheduled to end in June 2013, but due to increased popularity and fascination amongst Jozi residents, has extended its time on South African soil until 21 July 2013. The exhibition is currently on display at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in the heart of the city's Newtown District.

Body Worlds has been a life changing experience for so many visitors - showing the complexity, resilience, and vulnerability of the human body through anatomical studies of the body in distress, disease, and optimal health.

Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life brings a new dimension to the term edutainment. The extension of the exhibition enables school children to have the chance to experience text books coming to life and to learn about The Cycle of Life - from the spark of conception, through maturity to old age.

The specimens on display have been preserved through the process of plastination, a revolutionary preservation technique invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977. This anatomical exhibition stems from an established body donation programme and the informed legal consent of those on display.
