Theme of 2016 Cape Town Carnival announced

The chairman of the Cape Town Carnival Trust, Professor Rachel Jafta, has announced the theme of the 2016 carnival: Street Life.

Describing the 2016 theme in more detail, Creative Director Brad Baard explained: "The idea of Street Life came from the people and dynamics at play in a public space. Towns and cities are built on people and relationships, not bricks and concrete. We all have different styles and cultures, but are connected by the vibrant streets of Cape Town. Street Life aims to make these invisible connections visible."

The annual Cape Town Carnival takes place on Saturday, 12 March, 2016, on the Green Point Fan Walk. The night promises to be an electrifying experience, with the Street Life theme encouraging performers and carnival-goers to embrace their diversity and celebrate together.

Dressing up

The Cape Town Carnival organising team encourages all carnival-goers to enter into the magic of the event by coming to the Fan Walk with their Style Tribe and dressing up in their favourite street fashion. "We would like spectators to own the Cape Town Carnival night by spreading the festivities beyond the parade and onto the street," said Baard.

An estimated 55,000 spectators attended the 2015 parade and carnival organisers are anticipating an even greater turn-out in 2016 as the Cape Town Carnival continues to establish itself as an iconic community-driven event in the Mother City and South Africa.

Professor Jafta added: "More than 50 community groups and a number of dazzling performers and talented designers will collaborate to create their carnival - a platform where they can showcase their exceptional talents, express themselves and their cultural identities."
