Vital Winelands Run to support fight against women and child abuse

This year's Vital Winelands Run takes place on Saturday, 14 November in Stellenbosch. Funds raised at the event will benefit organisations fighting women and child abuse.

The event, which last year saw over 4,000 runners cross the finish line, includes a full marathon (42,2km), a half-marathon (21km), and a family-oriented 10km road race and 5km fun run that loop through the picturesque town of Stellenbosch. Last year the event raised R108,000, and sponsors Vital Health Foods hope to exceed that this year.

"As a company focused on the betterment of South Africans, we have an obligation to do whatever we can to protect our most vulnerable in an issue that carries horrific statistics," says George Grieve, MD for Vital Health Foods. "With this in mind, two years ago we launched the Vital Foundation, an information-sharing and funding body designed to support grassroots organisations involved in combating the scourge of women and child abuse. The public's response has been phenomenal, and the Vital Winelands Marathon is another opportunity to shine the spotlight on this issue."

Qualifier for Two Oceans and Comrades

Now in its 38th year, the event is a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades Ultra-Marathons, held in accordance with the rules of Athletics South Africa and the Western Province Athletics Association. Helderberg Harriers Running Club and Run/Walk For Life in Somerset West organise it.

Beginning in Stellenbosch, the marathons move out past Spier wine estate, then towards Somerset West on the R44. The turning point of the marathon is over the Steynrust Bridge just outside Somerset West. The half-marathon joins up with the marathon at the 32km mark on the scenically beautiful Stellenrust Road, before both end at Eikestad Primary School.
