NUM asks its members to resist "political" calls to strike

According to Times LIVE, a trade union said that about 1000 employees of the Royal Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum mine outside Rustenburg returned to work on Thursday.

"We congratulate the workers for refusing to be misled by people with political ambitions and for returning to work," regional National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) secretary Sydwell Dokolwana said in a statement.

The union appealed to members in Rustenburg and across the North West to "disregard calls to stay away from work as that is illegal and may jeopardise their jobs." After conveying their demands to NUM to take to the mine management on Monday, Royal Bafokeng workers downed tools on Wednesday and sang liberation songs, demanding their salaries be increased to R12,500.

In a statement on its website on Wednesday, the mine said operations at the north shaft, which accounted for 50% of the mine's production, were interrupted. The south shaft was not affected. Times LIVE reports.
