The CGCSA's annual conference opened last week with the association's CEO, Gwarega Mangozhe, calling on the industry to build structures. Gareth Ackerman later reminded delegates that, with the arrival of international players such as Wal-Mart, SA is very much a part of the global retail world. Speaking of Wal-Mart, the Competition Appeal Court has finally issued its verdict and has ordered Massmart to contribute R200 million over five years to a supplier development fund as one of the conditions of approval of the two companies merger. This supplier development programme is already bearing fruit for local suppliers - with Seven Sisters wines now on shelves in US Wal-Mart stores. Cape Union Mart is looking to develop local suppliers too, with the group's annual Suppliers' Open Day taking place this Wednesday. Have a successful week!
