Mussels are often referred to as the poor man's shellfish because they are relatively cheap and plentiful. Prepared properly, they can be a meal for royalty, let alone a poor man!

I know I might shock the socks off some of you, but I love pork in any form, shape or size! I often say that my last meal before I depart to "higher grounds" will be a crisp pork belly with all the trimmings.

There are such amazing markets in and around Cape Town, and every market has its own unique flavour and atmosphere.

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and although I have made two delicious desserts, my better half will enjoy "man food", especially if it has a subtle hint of spice and heat.

February is indeed the month of love and since we have so much love to share, why limit it to Valentine's Day only?

It's a new year with 365 days full of promise and exciting possibilities. Here in my kitchen it is definitely going to be a year filled with much excitement. My first cookbook, 'Easy Cooking from Nina's Kitchen', will be on the shelves late February 2014.

Everybody has an icon or hero; we have just survived the Justin Bieber tsunami and, for we old rockers, Bon Jovi brought new life to our nine-to-five exsistence. Middle-aged people stood in queues remembering days when life was carefree and wild. Burger King just landed in South Africa and everyone rushed off to sink their teeth into a giant Whoopie Burger.

This Friday is the beginning of the annual SA Cheese Festival at Sandringham Farm. I have been cooking up a storm at this festival for the last couple of years and it really is a feast not to miss. This year, the Friday programme has been extended to 10pm to accommodate people who work till late and also due to popular demand. So please drop by and cook or eat along.

Chocolate and Easter go hand-in-hand and magazines, food blogs and websites are bursting out of their seams with recipes containing the four basic food groups: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, and chocolate truffles.

Home-made yoghurt - why would anyone want to make it if the shelves are filled with all sorts of yoghurt? Low-fat, full cream, low sugar, real fruit, flavoured - phew, the choices are endless.

Goat's cheese is my new favourite ingredient. These tasty tarts not only require very little baking, but they are also gluten-free, which to me makes this a winning recipe.

The older I get the more I think that this Valentine's Day thing is just a commercial trick to get us all to spend money on things we would normally just walk past. Yet, on the other hand, I remember Valentine's Day at varsity and the whole of Stellenbosch just being one big mass of flowers and giggling students. So call me a sucker for love, but maybe forcing us all to be a little mushy one day of the year is not too bad, is it?

2013 started with a bang, that's for sure. I think the load on school-going children is more and more each year and, ultimately, the load on parents too as we drive the taxis that must get our children to their various events. So, putting it mildly, I am a wee bit weak in the knees already and we are in month two only. Luckily, I know that the children will soon settle into their routines and things can become less hectic.

Toad in the hole sounds to me like a chapter from a Beatrix Potter book and my imagination runs riot of a frog breathing heavily from a lilly pad or, even worse, a frog jumping at me (okay, so I have a frog phobia). So you can imagine that although I have been wanting to make toad in the hole forever, I had issues - big issues.

Your fruit cake should have been baked by now and you should be feeding it with brandy every week! Well, maybe if you were Julia Child or your great granny, yes, but hey, we live in the real world, which is pretty hurried and fast at the moment. With this easy fruit cake recipe, you can make your fruit cake with not much effort and with a drizzle of your favourite brandy every week or so, your fruit cake will be perfect by Christmas!

This Mexican Family Feast was my meal choice when I heard that I was a contestant and had to cook in the new cooking/blogging series called Dinner Divas. Why Mexican? It's simple, we love it!

Ice cream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! A refrain I remember from my childhood, but literally the case for the past two days that have shocked us into summer mode far too quickly. I said to someone just last week, that I am definitely not souped or stewed out yet, so if I had a say in the matter summer could be delayed for just a while longer.

Yes, spring is finally here and it is wonderful to be woken up by the birds every morning. It is not quite light when I wake up (5-ish) so my early-morning coffee in the garden will still have to wait for another week or so, but, nevertheless, it is time to spring-clean the house, body and soul.

September is almost here and so we would expect spring to be in the air. Luckily for me, we still have some very cold nights and, in the morning, I still prefer to have my coffee in bed rather than on the stoep. I love winter, I love comfort food and, let's face it, if I have to choose between a healthy salad or healthy soup, the soup will win hands down!
