Gone too soon, Carolyn Holden

[Debbie Hathway] "Stunned". "Bereft". "Perspective". These are some of the reactions to the tragic news of Carolyn Holden's untimely demise that most stand out for me.

Well it's one for the money, two for the show!

[Debbie Hathway] Luxury as a word is now overused, but it's one that holds synergy with Bovim Ballet productions in terms of style, presentation and profitability.

Launching careers 25 years on

[Debbie Hathway] What I've learned about choreographic dance platforms is to expect the unexpected, where mastery may be juxtaposed with absurdity, artistry with self-indulgence, technical excellence with raw potential. There will always be pieces; artists and choreographers as unforgettable as there are those that are forgettable and Dance Umbrella's special 25-year anniversary season programme was no exception.

Lacklustre celebration of familial flamenco heritage

[Debbie Hathway] At the southern tip of Africa, we are privileged to be exposed to some of the best artistic performances from around the globe. Spoilt for choice, maybe. Demanding, definitely. The more we get, the more we want. So when Juana Vargas, artistic director of Cape Town's Flamenco Del Sur, announces a collaborative performance with the long-established Linda Vargas Flamenco Company from Durban, it attracts high expectations from the local dance community.

[Debbie Hathway] What began as a Cape Town dance fundraiser for a mass-sterilisation project for township animals in May this year has quickly caught on nationally as Dancers Love Dogs hosts its Durban event tonight, Wednesday, 12 September, and prepares for a Joburg show in October.

Intimate Peña Flamenca

[Debbie Hathway] La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre returns to Muizenberg's Masque Theatre with Peña Flamenca, a new work that honours the authenticity of flamenco and its historic origins. The idea for the show was influenced by the context of artistic director Carolyn Holden's Master's dissertation, which centres on cultural transmission. It's a fly-on-the-wall experience of how a peña might look and feel at origin (a sought-after experience for those looking for a taste of authentic flamenco in Spain).

It's enough to make you catch your breath

[Debbie Hathway] It's amazing how artists can challenge and inspire each other to create work that, in turn, inspires and challenges their audiences - and be thanked for it. iKapa Dance Theatre's collaboration with Afropolitan Explosiv does just that in their season entitled Inhale/Exhale, on at Artscape's Arena Theatre until 4 August.
