Dear editors... step up or step aside
Thanks everyone. I appreciate your thoughts! I definitely needed to “vent” a bit, which is why the piece came across as a little sarcastic. I can’t speak for everyone, but writing for me isn’t about getting a “big break” to boost my ego. That’s a never-ending race to the bottom. I do what I do because it’s what I’m passionate about. And isn’t passion just anger and love?

Obviously I’m not suggesting that every single person who’s ever contacted a publication has something fresh and valuable to say (nor am I suggesting that we’re all “entitled” to consideration at all). But I don’t believe that it’s okay to completely ignore emails and phone calls from people who sincerely want to contribute and make their publications better, especially if they confirm receipt of the emails and promise to respond by a certain date. Is that unreasonable?

Ultimately, writers and publications both want to deliver great content to the readers. Assuming we have different intentions is unfortunate since that’s clearly not the case. Why can’t we all just get along? Posted on 1 Aug 2011 21:16
