Will rising WhatsApp costs slow down your marketing

New WhatsApp charges starting 1 October 2026, could force brands to cut campaign reach or engagement. Wina Wena offers a familiar, data-free journey with more predictable local costs.
Rising messaging costs can put pressure on campaign reach, media and prizes.
Rising messaging costs can put pressure on campaign reach, media and prizes.

Marketing teams already have to make difficult choices between media spend, prizes, creative, production and campaign technology.

From 1 October 2026, another cost needs to be considered. Meta is introducing charges for service messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform.

These are the messages businesses send in response to customers, such as entry confirmations, validation requests, status updates and follow-up prompts. They have traditionally been free within the customer service window.

Under Meta's published South African pricing, service messages will cost roughly 15c at current exchange rates. When a business solution provider adds a 6c fee, businesses pay approximately 21c per delivered service message, before VAT.

One message may not seem expensive. A large campaign can generate hundreds of thousands of them.

Keep the familiar experience without the WhatsApp cost model

Consumers like WhatsApp because the experience is simple and familiar. They know how to respond to prompts, tap buttons, upload images and continue a conversation.

The useful part is the experience. The campaign does not necessarily need to remain inside WhatsApp to provide it.

Wina Wena is a mobile-first promotional campaign platform developed by Brazen Labs. It gives consumers a familiar chat-style journey without requiring WhatsApp or a new app.

A consumer scans a QR code or taps a link and enters the campaign immediately. They can respond to prompts, select buttons, provide their details, upload a till slip, receive a reward and return to the journey later.

There is no app to download and no mobile data cost for the consumer.

Wina Wena can work alongside WhatsApp

Brands do not need to abandon WhatsApp.

WhatsApp remains useful for customer service, complex questions and conversations where its reach and familiarity justify the cost.

Wina Wena can handle the repetitive, high-volume part of the campaign, including entries, confirmations, validation, rewards and follow-ups. WhatsApp can remain available for customer support or selected communications.

The customer still receives a familiar conversational experience. The brand gains more control over the journey and avoids placing every interaction inside the WhatsApp pricing model.

A more predictable way to run high-volume campaigns

Wina Wena uses straightforward rand-based pricing.

The platform costs R2,900 per month and includes the first 10,000 messages every month. Additional messages cost 10c each. Campaign development is quoted separately according to what the brand needs.

A 100,000-message comparison makes the difference clear:

Wina Wena's 10c additional-message rate is less than half the combined 21c WhatsApp and BSP rate. In this illustration, Wina Wena saves R9,100 overall, even after the monthly rental is included.

The illustration excludes VAT and the separately quoted campaign build. Actual WhatsApp costs will vary with the exchange rate, message category, free allowance and provider charges. The difference can be greater when Wina Wena interactions replace higher-priced WhatsApp marketing messages.

Brands can also estimate the messaging cost before launching. That makes it easier to plan campaign reach, engagement and follow-up communication without worrying that success will create an unexpected bill.

Do not make the campaign smaller

The risk created by rising message costs is not simply a larger technology bill. Brands may begin designing smaller and less engaging campaigns to avoid that bill.

The better response is to reconsider where each interaction happens.

Wina Wena allows brands to keep the easy, conversational experience consumers understand while running competitions, rewards and promotional journeys through a platform designed for that purpose.

Do not shrink the campaign to fit the messaging bill.
