A pass rate only counts the learners who sit the exam. Track the class that started Grade 1 together in 2014, about 1.25 million children, and a harder number appears. Only around 778,000 of them sat matric as full-time candidates eleven years later. Build One South Africa followed that same cohort through and calculated a pass rate of 54.7%, not 88%. That gap, between the 88% and the 55%, is the gap we built CambriLearn to close.
The drop happens later than most people assume. Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube pointed out that the sharpest decline falls between Grade 11 and Grade 12, not in the early years. Around 84% of children reach Grade 10. The last two years are where the class thins out. Those are the years we watch most closely, because a pupil who is quietly slipping in Grade 10 is a pupil at risk of leaving in Grade 11.
The reason is rarely dramatic. A child falls behind quietly. A missed topic in Grade 9, a term of confusion in Grade 10, and by Grade 11 the gap feels too wide to close. In a classroom carrying 40 or more pupils, the week someone starts to slip is the week nobody has the time to notice. South Africa has about 13.5 million learners and just over 460,000 teachers. Our answer to that arithmetic is small classes and live, timetabled lessons, where a teacher sees the slip in week two rather than in the year-end report.
Even a pass does not settle the question. Bachelor passes, the ones that open a university degree, slipped to 46% in 2025, and only 34.1% of the cohort took mathematics at all. Passing matric and leaving school with real choices are not the same thing. Of the students who finish their final year with CambriLearn, many go on to be accepted into universities in South Africa and abroad.
The record 88% deserves its applause. The nearly half a million young people who started school in 2014 and never reached matric deserve a harder conversation about what keeps a child in class until the end.
