    Educating for good governance
Research indicates that there is a strong correlation between education and governance. There are multiple relationships between education and good governance and they are cyclical and mutually reinforcing. Of particular interest are the characteristics of education systems and the content of education, which may mediate the effects of education on governance. In particular, education that is socially inclusive and relevant has a positive effect on governance, while education that alienates or marginalises individuals or lacks relevance to the aspirations and possible livelihoods of people may have negative effects on governance. For example, the content and skills about which a citizenry is empowered through education will determine how it has an effect on governance. 7 Dec 2016 Read more

Governance, corruption and state capture: Portending a slippery slide for South Africa's economy
In recent weeks we have been witness to a proliferation of media reports and press clippings about alleged corrupt relationships between the Gupta family and the state. For example, Andrew England writing in the Financial Times claims that the predatory relationship between capital interest and the state is not only a shady one, but is effectively the cause of state pillage. In this respect he alleges that the Gupta family has for all intents and purposes been responsible for 'state capture'. He further argues that under these circumstances the Gupta family is increasingly portrayed "as a symbol of the malaise afflicting the nation", especially in terms of wielding their influence over state officials and appointments and procuring government contracts. 3 May 2016 Read more

Regent Business School alumni deems innovative thinking a scarce commodity in the public service sector of Africa
I have always been intrigued by the high levels of sophistication and development defining the standards of living and professionalism in different sectors and or industries of both the Western and Eastern worlds. From the perspective of the public sector, my recent tour to the UK of the British Civil Service suggested that the answer was in the willingness to evolve with changing times, and by inference, to innovate perpetually. 30 Mar 2016 Read more

Private-public partnerships can assist in the higher education crisis
It is an extremely hot summer's day in January 2016 as we drive down Stalwart Simelane Street in Durban, almost two decades after the birth of our democracy. Suddenly we witness a chaotic scene alongside the University of South Africa. Out of curiosity we bring our vehicle to a sudden halt. We exit the motor vehicle to find out what is happening. Our enquiries inform us that the almost unruly crowd were waiting from the early hours of the morning to join a queue to enter the buildings of the higher education institution. The queue or rather a throng of people is composed of old and young people, possibly parents and their university aspirant offspring hoping to register for a higher education programme. The never-ending mass of people is clearly reminiscent of the myriads of eager South Africans that waited patiently in the sweltering heat to cast their votes for the dawn of a new South Africa. The majority of these were black people confident that their dreams of a new dispensation would be fulfilled and they would live a better life in the rainbow nation that was enunciated by a new government in waiting. 18 Feb 2016 Read more

The phenomenon is called Entrepreneurship. 8 Jun 2015 Read more

Hedge funds and corporate raiders in Africa: Space invaders of the third kind
Recently, at a Journal Club meeting, we had occasion to read and critically analyse an excerpt from William Dalrymple's new book, The Anarchy: How a Corporation Replaced the Mughal Empire, 1756-1803. The book apparently is expected to be published next year (company-original-corporate-raiders). While the article provided a critical overview of the brutal British exploitative history in India, it alerted the reader to the fact that it was not the British Government per se that was responsible for 'looting' the riches of India, but a corporate named the "East India Company". This does not in any way suggest that Britain can deny its complicity in the 'raiding' of India. Dalrymple poignantly and eloquently reminds the reader of the 'hurt' that is still felt in India when the 'loot' is displayed in the form of artworks or artifacts in a foreign land that was for all intentions and purposes a 'right royal marauder'. 10 Mar 2015 Read more

Private providers can widen access to higher education in South Africa
An academic revolution has taken place in higher education in the past half century marked by transformations unprecedented in scope and diversity. The academic changes of the past few decades are extensive due to their nature and the number of people they affect. Globally, public higher education is in the throes of a major crisis. For example, one of the most pressing problems of our time is the demand for places in higher education which far outstrips supply of available seats globally. 3 Feb 2015 Read more
