Chinese medical staff led the way, but now manufacturers are following up with a widening range of medical equipment.
China has sent a total of 16,000 medical personnel to 47 African nations and regions since the dispatch of its first medical team to Algeria in 1963 and as a result of these efforts, a total of 240 million Africans have been treated by Chinese doctors. Currently about 900 members of the Chinese medical teams are working in about 35 African nations.
However, in addition to providing medical personnel, China is also becoming an ever-more important provider of medical equipment, from the simplest of items right up to highly sophisticated monitoring, diagnostic and examination units such as digital ultrasound systems from SonoScape, a company based in Shenzhen. The company typifies the Chinese drive towards technological excellence. It develops and manufactures digital colour Doppler ultrasound systems as well as very high-performance ultrasound probes. It has also developed a very complete range of high performance products from portable B/W units to leading-edge digital colour Doppler system. No more was this drive more apparent than at the recent Pan African Health Congress 2007, held in Johannesburg. The large Chinese contingent brought with them a comprehensive range of displays ably backed up by competent sales staff and experts.Africa's healthcare and related sectors can only benefit from the competition that the Chinese drive brings with it.
