DAMASCUS, SYRIA: Internet and telecommunications in Syria were down across the country according to the state news agency SANA, which blamed the cut on a fault with a fibre-optic cable.
"Maintenance and repair work is underway to re-establish the Internet and telecommunications services across Syria as soon as possible," Bakr Bakr, the director-general of Syria's telecommunications firm told SANA on Wednesday (15 May).
The outage was also reported by Google, which showed a drop-off in the Internet service that started in the morning. It was also noted by Internet tracking firm Renesys.
Internet in Syria has regularly been cut, most recently on 7 May, but was restored within 24 hours. At the time SANA also blamed the outage on technical problems, though activists said the government was deliberately cutting communications systems.
