Third SA woman to summit Everest dreams big for children's centre
The NGO realised its beginnings in founder Lee den Hond's epic journey to become the third South African woman to summit Mount Everest in honour of the cause, will be pulling out all the stops to create an evening of fashion, art and entertainment.
The fundraiser will be held on 20 November at The Venue in Melrose Arch, and will be supported by some of South Africa's top creative talents. "We are excited to announce the amazing support of some of South Africa's well-known artists, and we are incredibly grateful for their support," says Den Hond.
"The event will be produced by Jan Malan, known for his role as one of the producers on the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week shows, while the fashion collections of high profile designers such as David Tlale and Marianne Fassler will be showcased on the night," Den Hond explains. Art Eye Gallery, a dynamic investment art and contemporary art space, have generously donated one-of-a-kind pieces by local artists which will be auctioned at the event.
Den Hond goes on to say that the evening will be topped off with entertainment from well-known performers, including Yvonne Chaka and Joey Rasdien.
This exciting occasion originates from a cause which originally compelled Lee to summit Everest, and continues to drive her passion and dedication to see the completion of her goal. "My journey to the top of Everest was, in part, to satisfy my quest for adventure - but I knew I wanted to make this experience greater and do it to benefit others. With this driving force in mind, I set the goal to build a children's centre for the Schaumburg community near Hartebeespoort," says Den Hond.
Den Hond's 'true summit'
The upcoming Field of Dreams fundraiser marks the final phase of what Den Hond describes as her 'true summit' - raising further funds to finalise the building of the centre on land that has been purchased for this purpose.
"My vision for the centre is creating an environment for children and adults alike to have a functional, safe space for play and educational opportunities," she continues. "Our aim is to create a dedicated multi-use area which will house a number of regular groups, activities and experiences. These will include facility-based after school programmes such as sports sessions, arts activities, as well as facilitated homework and after school studies."
The centre, which will be located just opposite the community's informal settlement, will also be available to the adults of Schaumburg in the evenings - many of whom are unemployed - who will be able to learn a number of practical skills.
It is Den Hond's sincerest hope to see the community benefit through the efforts of the Field of Dreams organisation. "We urge the public to get involved by purchasing a ticket for R1,500 or by making a donation - we can only make this happen with your help!"
