Semenya won gold at the women’s 800m final on Sunday, 5 August, breaking the African record held by Maria Mutola. Now retired Mutola, who hails from Mozambique, set the record at the 1993 African Championships held in Durban.

Sunday’s win follows on last Friday’s record winning feat, where the Olympic gold medallist broke the record in the women’s 400m final. The 18-year-old record was held by Heide Seyerling.

The championship kicked off on Wednesday and concluded on Sunday.
