Food and beverages income reaches R4.5bn in December

Total income generated by the food and beverages sector in SA increased in nominal terms (current prices) by 1.4% year-on-year (y/y) to R4.5bn in December‚ Statistics SA's data showed on Monday (17 February).

This represented a 7.0% y/y increase from the R3.9bn generated in November.

The only positive annual growth was recorded for food sales‚ which increased 2.8%. In December‚ positive annual growth rates were reported for takeaway and fast-food outlets (3.6% and contributing 1.3 percentage points); and restaurants and coffee shops (3.5% and contributing 1.7 percentage points).

Total income increased by 4.0% in the fourth quarter of last year compared with the fourth quarter of 2012.

Positive contributors to this increase were takeaway and fast-food outlets (6.3% and contributing 2.3 percentage points); and restaurants and coffee shops (5.0% and contributing 2.3 percentage points).
