Using Wi-Fi and cellphone networks to triangulate locations, Google Maps allows people to navigate shopping malls, airports and some tertiary institutions.

"You can now map OR Tambo International, Cape Town International, the V&A Waterfront and Montecasino," said Hayley Alfers, spokesman for Google SA.

The Times tried it out last week. It didn't show where to find the lavatory, but it provided locations for most shops and restaurants at OR Tambo.

This is one of a number of new navigation apps.

The Campus Mate app developed by Manenga Mungandi, a third-year computer science student at the University of Cape Town, offers students a "campus in your pocket".

He used free online software and paid a licence fee of R235 for the app to be uploaded to Google Play.
