No booze in our hot cross buns, says CheckersCheckers hot cross buns have garnered extra attention on social media following the release of a video in which a false-positive breathalyser reading was recorded for a police officer. In the video, a gentleman dressed in law enforcement garb is asked to blow into a breathalyser machine, which then displays a reading indicating that he is sober. The officer is then encouraged to take a few bites from a hot cross bun. Subsequently, when he blows into the breathalyser again the machine produces a (false) positive reading of 0.21mg. The legal alcohol breath limit for driving in South Africa is less than 0.24mg per 1,000ml of breath.
The retailer says it's been inundated with requests for its hot cross bun recipe and clarity on the breathalyser reading. Shoppers are also asking to place bulk orders and want the hot cross bun range to be extended to Checkers LiquorShops, and even to be sold all year round. As is expected, South African Twitter has reacted with some hilarious tweets:
