Health economics and paediatric malnutrition

Dr Jörg Spieldenner, head of public health nutrition at the Nestlé Research Centre in Switzerland, will be presenting a talk at the Discovery Vitality Summit in Johannesburg on 16 August.

The talk will focus on the impact of banking nutrition in the early years of life and the influence this has on later life, both for the individual and as a measure of health economics.

Despite some improvements in recent years, deficiencies of both macro- and micronutrients, affects millions of children in South Africa and remains a critical concern as it is often the cause of a series of problems which affect us all. These include recurring illnesses, decreased physical and intellectual development, poor productivity and a number of negative economic outcomes.

Spieldenner will share his extensive knowledge on this subject, which includes how particular micronutrient deficiencies can be effectively addressed, the role of public and private partnerships, as well as the criteria and outcome of some innovative approaches.

With his varied medical and public health experience, including his involvement in writing National Strategies for Europe and Switzerland, and a string of titles to his name, Spieldenner is a leading expert in this field globally.
