The Department of Higher Education and Training has welcomed the decision by unions at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) to end the strike that has resulted in university residences being closed and students sent home.
Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande said the signing of the agreement at WSU is an indication of all parties' commitment to the restoration of the culture of teaching and learning at the institution.
"We commend the university's management and the union leaders for reaching this decision and we trust that all efforts will be made to ensure that the academic year is not lost and students can catch up on lost time," Nzimande said in a statement.
The department has engaged various stakeholders in trying to find solutions to the challenges that resulted in strike action at the university.
"In my capacity as the political principal, I wish to thank all parties involved in the negotiations for their commitment and hard work in developing and implementing WSU's turnaround plan," he said.
