Automotive industry strike underway

At least 30,000 workers in the car manufacturing sector are on a strike today (Monday 19 August), the SABC reported.

The assembly line workers went on strike after negotiations between the National Union of Metalworkers of SA, (Numsa) and the seven largest car manufacturers deadlocked in their negotiations.

The union was demanding a 14% increase. Employers have reportedly offered increases of between 7.5% and 8.5%.
