These diamonds were not forever

Tax inspectors in Japan are selling off at least $2m worth of diamonds on an Internet auction site after seizing them from people who had not paid their dues.

The five jewels include one with a starting price of ¥40.8m that experts say is a flawless 7.5 carat diamond with a diameter of 1.3cm.
Gemologists graded the diamond D, meaning it is colourless.

In a series of auctions starting this Friday, five jewels will go under the virtual hammer. The starting price for any of the gems is ¥25.6m.
The tax agency has refused to reveal who the tax delinquents that forfeited the diamonds are.
